Ante-Up for Africa gives a strong hand-up to DPDO

Friday, August 14th, 2009

2009 has been a make-or-break year for non-profits, DPDO included. Many humanitarian aid organizations have either shut down or scaled back their programs, forcing millions of beneficiaries in Darfur to struggle for survival.

I had recently arrived at a critical point: How could I continue DPDO’s work with so little assurance of funding? My staff and Board of Directors were working continuously to raise money — but no one had even suggested we reduce or stop our programs.

Then I received a call from my colleague and friend, Omer Ismail. He asked for a two-page statement on how DPDO would use $300,000. It was a more or less routine request. But, two weeks later, a check for $200,000 was in my hand, with another $100,000 to follow.

Thank God, passionate people are at work, finding unique ways to help rebuild the lives of the Darfuri people.

We send our profound thanks to Norman Epstein, Annie Duke, Don Cheadle and everyone at Ante-Up for Africa for their strong “hand-up” in our time of need.
