Former combatants lay down arms

El Fasher, 04 July 2010 – More than 800 former combatants are expected to take part in a three-week voluntary discharge exercise that begins today in El Geneina, West Darfur.

The exercise, involving ex-combatants from the parties to the conflict, is scheduled to run for two weeks.

While the event is part of the Government’s disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) programme, UNAMID is assisting by providing logistical support, including security, transport, HIV/AIDS…

Nyala youth train in conflict mediation

01 July 2010 – UNAMID’s Civil Affairs component today completed a two-day workshop on conflict management for 50 youths in Nyala, South Darfur, where most combatants and victims of conflict are in their twenties.

The workshop aimed at helping participants resolve ethnic disputes in their communities. The youths discussed theories of conflict resolution and focused on active listening, negotiation and mediation skills.

Two rival Darfur tribes sign reconciliation agreement

29 June 2010 – Two Darfur tribes, the Misseriya and Rezeigat Nouaiba, yesterday signed a reconciliation agreement in Zalingei, West Darfur. The ceremony, held at the local University, was attended by the Wali (Governor) of West Darfur, officials from the Sudanese Judicial and Legislative Council, senior military and police officials and members of the Native Authority, as well as officials from UNAMID.

El Fasher, 21 June 2010 – Three peacekeepers with the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur were killed and one seriously wounded today in a sustained armed confrontation with unknown attackers near the village of Nertiti, in the Jebel Marra region of West Darfur.

The Darfur Ceasefire Commission (CFC) was inaugurated on Tuesday, 13
June 2006, at the Force Headquarters of the African Union Mission in Sudan
(AMIS) in El Fasher, Sudan.
