DPDO has been able to secure a show room in EL Fasher city to sell the handcrafts produced in our women center in Kassab IDP camp. It will serve as a new chain of distribution. Women from the Kassab camp will be managing the show room.

During this process, Suliman and Omer conducted over 30 workshops with internally-displaced people (IDPs) in Darfur and refugees in Eastern Chad on how to engage them in the Darfur Peace Process. They discussed the difficulties that the IDPs and refugees face in the camps on a day-to-day basis. They also addressed what both the IDPs and refugees see as their vision for achieving the sustainable peace that will facilitate their return to their homelands.

The workshops presented a venue for the IDPs and refugees to voice their concerns over returning to their lands. They raised security and protection issues as the major constraints that need to be seriously addressed. It was emphasized that no one can return to their lands unless the new settlers are asked to leave. They also brought up issues of compensation, justice, reconciliation, reconstruction, and humanitarian services.

Suliman and Omer have now returned to the US to present their findings to the Department of State.

DPDO’s Women’s Center has grown into a sturdy lifeline for war-displaced women and their children in Kassab Camp, North Darfur.

227 women are learning to read and write. The students of our literacy program fill 8 classrooms. A room at the Center has been designated as a library; the women request both shelves and the books to fill them. Also at their request, a basic-level English language class has started.

26 women are currently enrolled in a new household management program, learning hygienic food preparation, child nutrition, first aid, and solar cooking.

125 women are gainfully engaged in the basket weavers’ program. Some are developing their own small business plans.
