DPDO sponsored a three-day first aid training, May 17-19, at DPDO’s Women’s Center in Kassab IDP camp. The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) provided a trainer. Twenty-one women participated and will receive first aid kits provided by the SRCS. Other first aid training workshops will be scheduled through the next six months.
DPDO will begin basic literacy education by August 2009…
Susan Burgess-Lent, DPDO Program Director, recently completed a month-long mission in Darfur to assess the progress of DPDO’s Women’s Center, Schools, and Solar Cookers Program as well as to lay groundwork for future collaborations with UN agencies and NGOs.

Nearly 300 donated Tents of Hope have been released from the Port of Benghazi in Libya.
Last week, large cargo boxes and trucks were prepared to transport the shipment to Darfur. The cargo also includes donated clothing, computers donated by Strayer University and library books for DPDO’s new high school in El Fasher. The tents and clothes will be distributed to schools and IDP camps in Darfur.

Costs related to the truck transport and distribution process: $15,000-$18,000.

DPDO president, Suliman Giddo, recently published an article in Sudan Tribune newspaper. The article focuses on the role of Chad as a contributing factor to the conflict in Darfur. Read this article on Sudan Tribune’s website.
This month marked the end of the school year for schools in North Darfur. Eighth grade students completed the year with a high school entrance exam. The exam is a culmination of knowledge that the students obtained throughout their entire educational careers.
Two of DPDO’s Schools, Shobani and Daro, had a 100% passing rate on this exam. All DPDO Schools had at least a 94% passing rate.

DPDO recently received $7,600 worth of donations from the Englewood, New Jersey community. The drive for donations was organized by 16-year-old Kathryn Cooperman. For her Sweet Sixteen party in February, Kathryn requested that her family and friends make a donation to DPDO’s Solar Cooker Program instead of giving her traditional birthday gifts.
Kathryn has been involved in Darfur relief and advocacy efforts for the past three years. She was deeply moved when she learned about the Solar Cooker Program and how it prevented women from having to take dangerous treks outside their camps to collect firewood. She inspired her community members with her selflessness and commitment to this important cause. The $7,600 that Kathryn raised will help provide solar cooker training and materials to hundreds of families in Darfur IDP’s camps. DPDO is very grateful to Kathryn and her friends and family for their generosity.

DPDO has facilitated the shipment of 185 boxes of clothing and school supplies, 200 tents, and 120 computers to Darfur. The container departed the US in early January and will arrive in Darfur approximately mid-March for distribution. Keep updated on delivery and distribution at DPDO’s blog
