Italian aid worker released after 4 months of abduction in Darfur
December 16, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese security service today released an Italian aid worker kidnapped in South Darfur states since four months and arrested six of his kidnappers.

Gunmen abduct five internationals and four Sudanese in Darfur – UN

September 28, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Five international staff and four Sudanese nationals were kidnapped in Darfur by unknown gunmen on 9 September, a UN source disclosed today.

The incident occurred at Umraik village in North Darfur, which is approximately 30 km North East of Ana Bagi and 65km North west of Kutum. The group was traveling from El Fasher to Chad at the time.

September 29, 2011 (PARIS) — Foreign minister Ali Karti said yesterday that Sudan can allow aid groups to work in Blue Nile and southern Kordofan only when the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) stops the fighting in the two troubled provinces.

The fight broke out between Sudanese army and rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the two states bordering the Republic of South Sudan, since June for South Kordofan and Blue Nile in September.

September 25, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — A Darfur rebel group accused the Sudanese government of killing two people in an attack carried out in North Darfur, while the peacekeeping mission reported firing of rockets in South Darfur.

Despite the deteriorating humanitarian conditions where the displaced civilians in Darfur camps receive a third of their needs since more than a year ago, the security situation according to the UNAMID witnesses a relative improvement.

Bashir to declare Sudan’s new government lineup in late August

August 16, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s president Omer Al-Bashir will announce a new government makeup that will see the country’s cabinet being halved and security apparatus bifurcated, according to officials from his ruling party.

Al-Bashir’s National Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday announced that the new government will be formed in late August before Eid Al-Fitr holiday which follows the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Italian aid worker kidnapped in South Darfur

August 15, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — An Italian aid worker has been abducted yesterday in the capital of South Darfur state by an unidentified group of armed men, the UNAMID and Italian government said today.

The logistics specialist was kidnapped on Sunday while he is was in the rout to the airport with two Sudanese colleagues, the UN hybrid mission said Monday. The abductors who were dressed in plain clothes took Francesco Azzara after stooping the car.

Former Ghanaian president says Darfur a moral failure for Africa

August 14, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The former president of Ghana Jerry Rawlings warned Africa that they should not do a repeat of what he described as their moral failure in Sudan’s western region of Darfur.

Rawlings made the remarks following his meeting with Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday which was devoted to discussions on the famine situation unfolding in the Horn of Africa and particularly in Somalia.

Sudan warns United States it will reject any new initiative for peace in Darfur

August 13, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government said it would reject any American initiative aiming to hold new negotiations with the rebel groups to end the eight year conflict in Darfur.

US Senior Advisor for Darfur, Dane Smith, said his government would invite Sudanese government, Darfur rebels and international partners to meet in Washington next September. He pointed out that the reunion aims mainly to consider the way forward after the signing of a peace agreement between Khartoum and the Liberation and Equality Movement (LJM). But he ruled out they would come with any initiative.
