Sudan arrests, beats female protestors as world marks International Women’s Day

March 8, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese anti-riot police on Tuesday arrested and beat dozens of women activists shortly after they attempted to stage a protest in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman against the alleged rape of a young female activist last month and right abuses, manifesting Khartoum’s growing anxiety over dissent.

Women protestors gathered in a public square in central Omdurman on Tuesday and lifted banners demanding the authorities to cease “violence against women,” citing the case Saffiya Ishaq, a young female activist who appeared in a Youtube video last month accusing members of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services of gang-raping her after she participated in anti-government protests late in January.

Sudanese government endorses two more states in Darfur

March 7, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese government endorsed today the creation of two new administrative entities in the restive region of Darfur increasing the number of states to five.

The decision comes days, after the announcement of a referendum on the administrative status of the region made by the presidential adviser in charge of Darfur file, Gahzi Salah Al-Deen.

Sudan rejects attaching additional conditions to removal from US terrorism list

March 6, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government said on Sunday that it will not accept any new conditions in order to see its name off the list of countries that sponsor terrorism as designated by the U.S. administration.

Washington announced last month that it initiated the process of delisting Sudan to reward Khartoum for facilitating the South’s referendum and later recognizing its results.

Amnesty criticizes Sudan’s record in bringing justice to Darfur

March 4, 2011 (WASHINGTON) – Human rights group Amnesty International said that the culture of impunity remains pervasive in Darfur with no steps taken by the Sudanese government to ensure accountability for the crimes committed in the war ravaged region.

“Impunity extends far beyond the highest level of government and militia leaders. Victims have no hope of accessing justice, truth or reparations nationally,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

SLM rebels want to meet UNAMID over deteriorating situation in Darfur

March 2, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur said they want to meet with the political and military leaderships of the hybrid peacekeeping operation (UNAMID) to discuss the deteriorating situation of civilians and displaced persons in Darfur.

“The leadership of the Sudan Liberation Movement wants to meet with the Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari and the Force Commander Patrick Nyamvumba to discuss cooperation on issues related to the protection of civilians and humanitarian access,” said SLM spokesperson Nimir Abdel-Rahman.

February 25, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese army attacked rebels groups in the mountainous area of Jebal Marra to open roads in the troubled region of Darfur, said the spokesperson of the Sudan Armed Forces on Thursday.

Sudanese army and rebel groups since the end of last year intensified attacks and counter attacks in Darfur. Minni Minnawi, a signatory of Darfur Peace Agreement with the government rejoined the rebellion coordinating with other Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) groups or with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

US says Minnawi’s threats to attack Darfur airports are “unacceptable”

February 22, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The US State Department today said alarmed by threats issued last week by a rebel group to attack the airports in the restive region of Darfur saying such actions are unacceptable and put civilians and peacekeepers at risk

The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi warned in a statement released on 20 February that all the airports in the region are “strategic military targets” asking the UNAMID, international and non-governmental organizations to stop using these sites.

Sudan used sexual violence against female activists, rights group says

February 22, 2011 (NAIROBI) – Sudanese security authorities have employed several forms of gender-based violence, including rape, against female activists who took part in recent anti-government campaigns, a local right group said on Sunday.

Small anti-government protests erupted on 30 January in the capital Khartoum and other parts of the country in response to a campaign organized via the internet by youth groups inspired by the wave of revolts convulsing the Middle East.

Sudan’s NCP says that Bashir will not seek re-election in 2015

February 20, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will not run for re-election in 2015, a senior official in the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) said on Sunday.

“[Bashir] announced that he will not enter the coming elections to compete for the presidency,” Rabie Abdel-Aati, a senior National Congress Party official, told Reuters.
