Drought may add another blow to troubled region

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

16 June 2010 – An expected further lack of rainfall in North Darfur will likely lead to significant food and water shortages throughout the region, this according to UNAMID’s Humanitarian Liaison Office. Compounding to the situation, the areas have faced recent massive displacements, as well as on-going fighting between armed movements and Sudanese forces in the El Taweisha area and stretching through to the East Jebel Mara region of South Darfur.

In addressing the influx of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the region, UNAMID will begin supplying water to an estimated 10,000 new arrivals at the Zamzam IDP camp, located on the outskirts of El Fasher town, North Darfur. The response comes following a request by the UN Country Team.
